How to Get Bitcoin

in Canada

There are numerous ways to get a hold of some Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies. But the easiest way that doesn't require getting out of your chair, except perhaps to grab your I.D. or Debit Card, is to just buy online.

Following is a list of ways to get some Bitcoin

Buy Bitcoin Online

This is probably the quickest and most simple way for most people. You often are not allowed to use a credit card to buy Bitcoin, this depends on your bank, however you can use debit cards or Interac e-mail Transfer at many places.

Depending on where you buy, this method usually requires your I.D., you may need to submit a secondary proof of address such as utility bill or bank statement, you may also need to verify your phone number via a text or call.

Places you purchase from are generally known as “exchanges” and often charge anywhere from 2 – 7% markup over the normal price of Bitcoin.

Buy From a Bitcoin ATM

A number of companies have built specialized ATMs which are able to sell you Cryptocurrency. Usually you can purchase a few different popular Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum or Bitcoin Cash. We don't recommend buying Bitcoin Cash, it is not the same as Bitcoin and it is not some cheaper form of Bitcoin. With that said, here's a basic idea of the process.

First you need to determine if there is a Bitcoin ATM close enough to you or a place you might be going soon. There are a few websites which display locations, not all of them show the same ATM's so you should check them all. At the end of this ATM section we'll list a few websites you can visit to check locations.

ATM's don't usually require any kind of I.D., this may change in the future but at the time of writing they generally do not. They also usually require a debit card. You can try a credit card and some of them also except cash bills, but not all ATM's are equal. They will sometimes list what payment methods exist on the ATM finder sites.

Finally, you should expect anywhere from a 8 – 14% markup in currently reported price of Bitcoin or other Cryptos. Don't be put off by this, this is no different from buying gold or silver from a bank, they usually come with quite a markup.

Sell Goods and Services for Bitcoin

If you operate a business or even if you have extra things laying around your house that you wish to get rid of, you can often accept Bitcoin or other Cryptocurrencies directly both as an online payment to you or face to face in person meetup. It is even expected that soon you will be able to sell items on eBay and other similar online shops for Bitcoin. People have even sold their cars and houses directly for Bitcoin alone!

Work for Bitcoin (Employment)

This is kind of an expansion of the last section but sometimes you're able to find employers or even just do side freelance/contract work and be paid either partially or fully in numerous Cryptocurrencies.
